St. Justin Martyr and the Old Testament

In our reading of Justin’s First Apology, we frequently made reference to how Justin was crucial in the shaping of how Christians ought to conceive of the Old Testament. Namely, he was instrumental in formulating how the apostolic Church encountered Jesus Christ in the Old Testament Scriptures.

If you would like a bit more of a deep dive into this topic, consider a piece I wrote for the Emmaus Institute, titled Is the Old Testament for Jews or for Christians? Reading Scripture with Justin Martyr.

In this piece I include references from Justin’s First Apology as well as other works (e.g., Dialogue with Trypho) to examine just how Justin nurtured his Christian faith through prayerful study of the Old Testament and the daily pursuit of virtue.
